Hi. Please use the comment section below to ask me anything about food, weight loss, healthy living, or anything you’d like. I don’t have all the answers but I’ll give you my thoughts. This is a new section for me which is why there are no comments below.
Hi-
I know you talked about pesticides, I have been buying and loving using the ‘triple-washed’ spinach at the supermarket. Do you think I can really trust that it’s washed well? Skipping the washing and drying makes salad preparation so much easier!
Donna,
In a past Friday News Bites I referred to the fact that bagged greens have been found to contain a high amount of fecal matter. Ew. So the answer is no, I don’t think you can trust their cleanliness!
Stephanie,
I’ve got question: I manage to eat a great breakfast, lunch and dinner. I do really well all day. Then, 30 minutes before bed, I start snacking. I can’t resist. I don’t seem to know how to “go to bed hungry”, which I’ve been told is the thing to do.
Help me.
SK.
Sk,
There are a few things potentially happening.
1. You’re not actually eating enough food, or eating enough of the right food, during the day. Be sure to choose nutrient dense foods, plenty of protein, and plenty of FAT!!! Fat is satiating and will keep you fuller for longer.
2. You’re eating for emotional reasons – boredom, stress, loneliness, etc.
Do either of these resonate for you?
All the best,
Stephanie
Ok. It’s 5:30 here. I’ll try to eat more now so I’m full later.
And yes. I eat because I bored/restless. I like to eat before bed. I don’t know how to stop. Seriously.
Hi,
Just found your blog! Love it.. I have a question for you.. I have had amenorrhea for 16 months :/ I have had bloodwork, an MRI, internal and external ultrasounds, EVERYTHING. My doctor/ naturopath both do not know what is wrong. Finally a trainer @ my gym said it may be my bodyfat.. I got it tested and it is 12%. I am 5′5” 116 lbs and I workout about 3x per week. Do you think I could raise my bodyfat level and regain my cycle without having to stop strength training? Any help would be appreciated! Thanks
Hi Laura,
Glad you like the blog!
You could definitely use a little more body fat. But 3x/week of strength training is not overdoing it, and I would hate to advise anyone to stop exercising sensibly, so let’s look at some alternate routes. Are you eating enough, and enough of the right, healthy foods? It’s also possible that hormones are out of balance. Consulting with myself, your naturopath, or another trusted health practitioner, can help you identify if and how supplementation w/ natural (not synthetic!) hormones could help.
Best of luck!
I cant wait to hear you on Jimmy Moore’s podcast. Look forward to it!
Hi! This is probably a silly question, but when you refer to cutting out ALL sugar, you are not referring to naturally occurring sugar (as in whole fruit), are you?
Not a silly question. Fruit does raise your blood sugar, but it contains fiber and enzymes that slow its digestion. I don’t think fruit is a necessary thing to eat – vegetables have all fruit has, and more. However, a piece of fruit once in a while is not a bad thing. Just don’t eat 3 pieces a day! It’s unnecessary.
Anything?

I noticed that you are endorsing Boda Botanicals. I’ve not heard of this product and am interested to know more, but could you help me understand why you are promoting a product that “doesn’t have a mother”. I’ve been trying to adopt that principle when making choices about what I put in my body so, I’m wondering what makes you confident in a product that is of course processed. I look forward to hearing your response. Just stumbled across your blog and love it! Thanks.
Hi Nicole,
This is a great question.
Supplements don’t have a mother (no one gives birth to vitamins and minerals!;) ). They are essentially bits of nutrition in very concentrated form. Sometimes they are extracted from natural sources and sometimes they are created synthetically. BODA is extracted from natural sources.
We need to take supplements simply because we cannot get all the nutrients we need from food alone, anymore. Note that this is a debatable topic – some people believe otherwise. But here’s an example. The amino acid taurine is only found in large amounts in raw dairy, raw eggs, and raw meat. While our ancestors ate these items, we don’t. And taurine’s necessary for many functions in the body. Therefore, I believe we should supplement with it.
Same goes for CLA, the main ingredient in BODA. CLA is created when animals are fed their native diet. Most animals today are fed corn and soy, so they are not making sufficient amounts of nutrients in their bodies. CLA is one of these nutrients.
I encourage you to read the info about BODA on the website and of course come to your own conclusions about it. For me, the proof is in the pudding, ie the studies that have been conducted on the supplement.
All the best,
Stephanie
